Department of Agriculture announces beef recall
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A Fresno-based beef company is recalling ground beef products because of concerns it may be linked to an outbreak of salmonella.
The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service says Beef Packers, Inc. is recalling 825,769 pounds of ground beef produced between June 5-23. The recall, announced Aug. 6, says the beef products bear the establishment number “EST. 31913” printed on case code labels.
The beef was distributed to retail distribution centers in Arizona, California, Colorado and Utah. The USDA says because the beef was repackaged under different retail names, consumers should check with the store they bought beef from to determine if they’ve purchased any recalled beef.
Russia signs oil pact, offers $150M credit to Cuba
HAVANA (AP) — Russia and Cuba signed agreements to search for oil in the Gulf of Mexico, and Moscow extended the island $150 million in credit for construction materials and farm machinery, state media said July 29.
The credit will give Cuba more time to pay for Russian equipment shipped to areas most affected by three hurricanes that caused more than $10 billion in damage last summer. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin signed the agreement, according to the Cuban government’s AIN news agency. Russian media reported that Sechin met with Cuban President Raul Castro, but Cuba’s press did not mention a meeting.
The four accords with oil monopoly Cubapetroleo will let Russian concern Zarubezhneft explore for crude in deep waters off Cuba’s coast, though details were sparse. Zarubezhneft and other Russian companies signed a memorandum of understanding in Moscow in January pledging to help Cubapetroleo with prospecting, production, refining and other oil activities.
Boy, 9, dies when run over by hay wagon
GRABILL, Ind. (AP) — Police say a 9-year-old boy was killed at an Amish farm in northeastern Indiana when he was run over by a horse-drawn wagon.
Steven Lengacher was riding Thursday night with his father on a cart, which was pulling a wagon loaded with hay. Allen County sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Stone says investigators didn’t know what caused the boy to fall from the cart.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene near the town of Grabill, which is a few miles northeast of Fort Wayne.
Jimmy Bedford, ex-master distiller, dies at age 69
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Jimmy Bedford, 69, the slender and silver-haired former master distiller at the Jack Daniel’s Distillery during a 40-year career with the company, died Friday.
His body was found outside a barn at his farm in Lynchburg, apparently the victim of a heart attack, company officials said.
Bedford had retired in March 2008 after spending the previous 20 years as master distiller supervising the entire operation at the 143-year-old distillery in Lynchburg, the oldest registered one in the United States. Among his duties was tasting the whiskey before it was sent to retailers.
Bedford traveled the world as the promotional face behind the product. He appeared in one advertising photo standing behind a Jack Daniel’s bottle with his arms folded.
Amish man drowns in southern Kentucky
CADIZ, Ky. (AP) — An Amish man from Lancaster, Penn., drowned while swimming in a farm pond Aug. 1 in Trigg County in southern Kentucky.
Department of Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement Officer Ken Richards said 20-year-old Jonas Beilor died after taking off his lifejacket while swimming with friends. Richards told The Kentucky New Era that Beilor was in the area to help build a house in the Amish community.
Beilor’s body was recovered by divers from the volunteer Trigg County Rescue Team. Richards said Trigg County Coroner John Mark Vinson ruled the drowning accidental.
Postal Service using pigs cancellation stamp
FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — The U.S. Postal Service is giving a nod to an annual picnic in western Kentucky known for its barbecue and political speeches.
A special stamp cancellation featuring dancing pigs will be used for the first time to commemorate the “world’s largest picnic” at St. Jerome Parish in the community of Fancy Farm. Officer in Charge Bobby Stokes created the design. Stokes says he wanted to include pigs on the cancellation to carry over the barbecue theme. Mail order requests for the special cancellations will be available for 30 days starting Aug. 1. |
