Students can win prizes, scholarships, meet NFL star
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indianapolis Colts, in conjunction with the Indiana Corn Marketing Council (ICMC) and the Indiana Soybean Alliance (ISA), recently announced that the Hoosier Horsepower Lesson Plans are now available to Indiana’s high school teachers. The lesson plans, which help students explore the benefits biofuels provide our state, feature Colts Tight End Dallas Clark as the programs spokesperson. Teachers can access the lesson plans and become eligible to win Colts prizes by registering at www.colts.com/hoosierhorsepower

“We wanted to develop lesson plans which were comprehensive enough to explain the benefits of biofuels, but easily implemented in the classroom,” said Mark Henderson, ICMC and ISA executive director. “We think combining solid lesson plans with the appeal of an NFL star like Dallas Clark will make this an exciting program for students and teachers.”

Clark is currently the second leading receiver in the NFL. He is also on pace to break the league record for receptions in a season by a tight end. For each catch Clark makes this season, the Colts will donate $100 to the “Fueling Our Future Scholarship Fund” on behalf of Indiana’s corn and soybean farmers. The fund awards scholarships to students utilizing the Hoosier Horsepower Lesson Plans.

While only the high school lesson plans are currently available, the Hoosier Horsepower program will also offer grade-level lessons for middle school and elementary school students by the end of the year.  Teachers, students and classrooms can win autographed footballs, appearances by the Colts Mascot “Blue,” pizza parties, as well as tours of Lucas Oil Stadium and the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center. One teacher will be selected as the state’s “Agricultural Teacher of the Year.”

For more information on this program, visit www.colts.com/hoosierhorsepower or call Indiana Soybean Alliance/Indiana Corn Marketing Council at 317-347-3620.

Ellsworth co-sponsors FFA Commemorative Coin Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Brad Ellsworth (D-Ind.) co-sponsored H.R. 3464, the National Future Farmers of America Commemorative Coin Act of 2009.  This legislation, originally introduced by Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Iowa), instructs the U.S. Department of the Treasury to mint and issue gold and silver coins in commemoration of the National Future Farmers of America Organization and its upcoming 85th anniversary.  After Treasury expenses are paid for, the proceeds of the commemorative coin sales would create an endowment to enhance and expand programs that encourage the development of leadership skills, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education and the Future Farmers of America.

Collegiate Discussion Meet winners announced
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Farm Bureau Collegiate Discussion Meet winners from Vincennes University and Purdue University have been announced.

“The discussion meet is a great way for students to apply what they have learned in their classes and help present solutions to current agricultural issues,” said Chris Fenner, Indiana Farm Bureau leadership development coordinator. “It teaches them how to express their ideas with others to build consensus on issues.”

Myel Reed was the winner of the Vincennes University contest. Reed is a first-year transfer student studying agribusiness at Vincennes. He is involved in the Agriculture, Business, Technology Club and intramural sports. He also interns for the External Relations Department. He is the son of Michael Reed and Karen Woolfork, both of Evansville.

Laura Ann Donaldson took top honors in the Purdue contest. She is a freshman studying agricultural economics. On campus, she is involved in collegiate Farm Bureau and is director of student life for Purdue Student Government. Her parents are Paul and Kathie Donaldson of Kentland, Ind.

Purdue’s meet is sponsored by Indiana Farm Bureau and the Indiana Farm Bureau Collegiate Chapter at Purdue.

As winners of the meets at their schools, Reed and Donaldson have earned the opportunity to compete at the American Farm Bureau Federation Young Farmer and Rancher Leadership Conference in Tulsa, Okla., Feb. 20-22, 2010.

Farm Bureau Discussion Meet contests require participants to discuss an issue affecting agriculture with a panel of other members, similar to a committee meeting. Judges look for contestants who offer constructive criticism, cooperation and communication while analyzing agricultural problems and developing solutions. The competition is evaluated on an exchange of ideas and information on a pre-determined topic.
