Historic Ohio River Farm to be auctioned
BETHLEHEM, Ind. — The 503 acre Miles Farm, north of Bethlehem, Ind. with one mile frontage on the Ohio River, will be auctioned on March 18. This farm has been in the Miles Family since the 1880’s when Albert R. Miles purchased the property. In the 1940’s the farm was believed to have the largest tobacco base in Indiana, according to grandson and current tenant, Albert Miles. Tobacco was raised on the farm until 2005. For many years the farm had 175 acres of orchards in peaches (22,000 trees), apples and grapes. The produce was loaded onto flatboats on the river. Today, the farm is used as a cash grain operation and timber investment. The main farmhouse overlooking the river was torn down many years ago as well as seven tenant houses. The farm is being sold due to the death of David Miles, half owner, and family owners no longer living in the area. The farm will be offered at public auction in ten separate tracts on March 18 at 6 p.m. The auction will be held at the Historic New Washington School, known as A Step Back. The auction is being conducted by Schrader Companies, a nationally-recognized agriculture auction company with offices in Indiana, Ohio and Michigan.
Schrader Companies President Rex Schrader, stated “this property has over one mile of beautiful Ohio River frontage rising on a huge bluff and one mile of frontage on improved Miles Road”. Schrader further stated “the farm is one of the few area tracts of this size on the Ohio River and could be of interest to recreational enthusiasts, second home buyer, private estate builder or investors.”
Hines equine estate selling in April auction
OWENSBORO, Ky. — The western Kentucky farm that produced 2006 Derby contender and 2007 Eclipse Award winner Lawyer Ron, will be sold at auction on April 23. The home and farm developed by the late industrialist James T. Hines, Jr. consists of 244 acres and the main residence. Other improvements include four horse barns, an indoor riding arena, two caretaker’s quarters and other barns and paddocks. The main home has 10,000 square feet and features an indoor pool, a theatre and overlooks a three acre lake.
Lawyer Ron, named for Mr. Hines’ attorney and friend Ron Bamberger, was born on this farm. The home, barns and pastures were typical of anything Jim Hines owned – top quality design and construction and it was all meticulously kept. The absolute auction of this property will be conducted by Kurtz Auction & Realty Company, a regional real estate auction firm. Kurtz is licensed in seven states and conducts 200 auctions per year selling 500 parcels of real estate. The media is invited to view this property. Joe Mills, the auction project manager, will have the property open for television and print media from 1-2 p.m. on Monday, March 29 and from 1–2 p.m. on Monday, April 19. |
