Miami Trace FFA participates in Greenhand Quiz WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE, Ohio — Recently, a group of agricultural education students at Miami Trace participated in the Greenhand Quiz contest. The team took an exam that is designed to develop the FFA members’ awareness of the history of the FFA Organization and become familiar with the Official FFA Manual used by students of Agricultural Education. Participants aim to answer questions derived from the official FFA Manual, the history of the National FFA Organization, and the many purposes and opportunities of the FFA.
This year, Miami Trace was very successful in the contest. The team placed 5th overall out of 94 teams. MT freshman Evan Schaefer was the highest scoring individual, beating 1,100 other competitors from all across the state of Ohio.
The team consisted of: Evan Schaefer, Hannah Peterson, Nicole Straathof, Molly Garringer, Allison Rife, Katie Frost, Heather Johnston, Mikayla Mick, Logan Harvel, Zach Monroe, Courtney Hagler, Hunter Hobbs, Paige Bonham, Hayden Allemang, Tyler Horney, Gus Mitchem, Caitlyn Caldwell, Cierra McFarland, Chas Grover, Tyler Lower, Montana Born, Taylor Starcher, Julia Miller, Kaylee Runyon, Payton Price, Tyler Wrobel, Samantha Cummins, Cierra Coe, Betsey Bonham, Austin Rogers, Cody Knapp and Ashley Wood.
Ft. Loramie FFA members compete in speaking contests COLUMBUS, Ohio — Fort Loramie FFA members competed in FFA public speaking contests recently. Members competed and were ranked under four different categories. The four categories consisted of extemporaneous speaking, creed speaking, beginning prepared and prepared.
Sara Meyer, daughter of Dan and Chris Meyer and Meghan Bruns, daughter of Jeanie Bruns, competed in the creed speaking contest. In the creed contest, first-year FFA members are required to recite the FFA Creed from memory to a panel of judges and respond to questions regarding the creed. Both members earned a gold rating.
Katelyn Seger participated in the beginning prepared speaking contest with a speech about using social media to tell the story of agriculture to consumers. Katelyn presented her speech, entitled “Staying In Front of the Lens – Pork Checkoff Celebrates 25 Years of Strategic Planning,” and then responded to questions relating to her speech. Katelyn placed first in the sub-district contest and fourth overall in the district contest.
Stacie Seger placed second at the sub-district contest and first in the district contest in prepared speaking with her speech about algae bloom in Grand Lake St. Mary’s, entitled “Ohio’s Grand Puzzle.” She recently competed in the State FFA Public Speaking contest held at the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences campus of The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Stacie competed against 20 elite speakers from around the state and placed in the top two overall. She will learn her placing at the Ohio FFA Convention in May.
Stacie and Katelyn Seger are the daughters of Ken and Janice Seger of Fort Loramie.
The Fort Loramie FFA is a satellite program from the Upper Valley Career Center.
Fairfield FFA wins big in judging contests RICHMOND, Ind. — The Fairfield FFA Livestock Judging Team got off to a quick start this year winning two out of the five contests they have competed in, and placing in the top five at each contest.
This year the team has taken on a new form, working in conjunction with Elkhart County Extension to provide an opportunity for members from around the county outside of Fairfield Schools, to be a part of a judging team as well. The team, competing as the Elkhart County Livestock Judging Team, is made up of 24 members from Fairfield, Northwood, Goshen, Northridge, and Constantine.
Four members of the team first traveled to Iowa Beef Expo where they brought home 1st place honors, winning by a margin of 84 points. The team, made up of Jessica Beer, Marissa Lorenz, Carrie Anglemeyer, and Ashley Leer also won reasons and placings. Beer finished the day in first, winning placings as well, and Lorenz placed second overall and first in reasons.
The team then traveled to the East Central Contest in Richmond, Ind., finishing in fourth place overall. Lorenz led the way, bringing home a strong third place finish. Next up, was the highly competitive Blackhawk East Livestock judging contest that brings in top teams from all over the Midwest. Here the team placed fifth overall and first in swine in a close field that saw only a nine point gap from fifth to second. Beer was the high placing member of the team on this day, ending up sixth overall, while Lorenz had a great day in swine finishing in first place.
At the Cloverdale competition, the team once again ended up in fourth place, with Beer again leading the way with a second place finish. Carrie Anglemeyer also made her way up to the top ten, bringing home ninth place individual honors. This past weekend the team traveled to the Western Boone contest and brought home another first place trophy. Ashley Leer was the front man on the team with an impressive effort winning the contest by ten points. Right behind her was Anglemeyer in second helping catapult the team into the first place position. Other team members included Beer and Alex Miller. Next up for the team will be the Purdue Block & Bridle contest this coming Saturday, with area and state competitions to be held in the next couple of months.
Livestock judging consists of judging classes made up of four animals of the same species in either market or breeding divisions. Competitors place classes of beef cattle, sheep, swine, and meat goats. These students then give oral reasons defending their placing of the classes to the official judges in the reasons portion of the contest. Competitions usually include six to twelve classes of livestock and three to six sets of reasons.
Miami Trace wins state livestock judging contest COLUMBUS, Ohio — On Saturday, April 2, members of the Miami Trace FFA chapter competed in the State Career Development Event (CDE) judging contest. Chapters from all across the state of Ohio came to participate in this very competitive contest. All of the teams that placed in the top 10 will get to go on and give oral reasons in the next phase of competition.
Miami Trace’s general livestock judging team won the state contest, placing first out of 156 teams. The team consisted of Colt Penwell, Jamie Payton, Austin Chester, Trevor Kirkpatrick, Garrett Reed and Tanner Mick. Miami Trace’s agronomy judging team consisted of Ben Hisey, Rachel McClish, Ryan Hiser, Aaron Sollars, Madison Hisey, Landon Gibbs, Judith Straathof, Kyler May, Chandler Ford and Charlie Hiser. The team placed second overall out of 32 teams.
The dairy cattle team’s members were Terry Perkins, Barbara Sears, Sam MacGregor, Carly Strayer, Josh McKay, Tiarra Perkins, Melissa Ritneour and Brooke Mossbarger. The team placed seventh out of 70 teams.
The equine management team consisted of Shauna Allman, Zach Hoppes, Tabby Morris, Blake Pitstick, Kayla Kiser and Brandon Jordan. The team placed 26th out of 129 teams.
The poultry judging team placed eighth out of 61 teams and consisted of Josh Monroe, Julie Miller and Austin Bennett. |
