1958: Wicker, of Shelby Co., third in state’s 5-acre contest

Wayne Wicker of Shelby County placed third in the state in the five-acre yield contest. Mr. Wicker had a 196 bushels-per-acre yield, with his Funk’s G corn.

Public sale: 50 head of Hampshire bred sows and gilts, 150 head Hampshire feeding shoats and 200 head of Northwestern ewes, all to be sold at the Jim and Lawrence Love farm west of Eaton, Ind. – Ellenberger Bros, Auctioneers.

Duroc boars and gilts, priced at $50 gilts and $60 boars – located north of Dunreith, Edgar Hall.

Grand Opening Special at Stockyard Meat Co. in Centerville, Ind.: steaks, roast, 81 cents per pound; steak loin, $35.60 (average weight 40-100 pounds); primal cuts, 99 cents-$1.89 per pound; beef halves $69 per 100 pounds.

For sale: alfalfa seeds, Certified Vernal, $44.95 per bushel; Non-Certified Vernal, $43.20 per bushel; clover seeds, Alsike, $23.40 per bushel; Med. Red, $40.80; Mammoth, $37.20; Sweet Clover, $13.80: grasses, Orchard Grass, 47 cents per pound; Ky. 31 Fescue, 39 cents per pound; Timothy, 29 cents per pound – Wilson Grain, Inc., Sulphur Springs, Ind.

A total of 362 cattle were sold at the Producers Market in Centerville, with choice grade steers and heifers selling for $40-$43.60 per cwt. Sheep and lambs sold totaled 68, selling for $35-$35.25. Hogs sold totaled 181, from $29.50-$34 for butcher hogs.

Vista Brook Farm of Danville, Ky., exhibited the Champion Boar at the recent Landrace-Hampshire Winter Type Conference held in Dothan, Ala. They also exhibited the Reserve Champion Boars. Champion Bred Gilt was exhibited by Alfred Daum and family of West Milton, Ohio.

Reserve Open Gilt was exhibited by Randy and Tona Smith of Alexander, Ill. The Premier Sire for the conference was owned by the Smiths and Menges Bros. of Danville, Ill. Premier Breeder for the event was Cedar Ridge Farms of Red Bud, Ill.

The Purdue Agricultural Alumni Assoc.’s highest award, the Certificate of Distinction, was presented to James R. Martin, Clarksburg; Robert K. Wickmann, Tipton; Joseph E. Yahner, West Lafayette; and James E. Newman, Lafayette, during the annual Fish Fry and Science Forecast.

Some items sold that went for premium prices were: 1994 JD 9500 combine, $43,500; JD 693 corn head, $8,500; JD 3020 diesel, $5,700; JD 6200 and loader, $25,750; JD 12-row 845 cultivator, $2,800; JD 1760 12-row planter, $17,500; and Vermeer 605 K round baler, $8,500.

Ebberts Field Seeds, Inc. of Covington, Ohio, offers corn hybrid seeds at $63.95 pre-pay early orders; bags contain 80,000 kernels per bag in graded sizes. Ebberts “RR” Soybeans are $18.95 for 50 pounds, and Ebberts 2330STS & 3380 (non-RR”) are $11.25 for 50 pounds.
