1965: 50 years ago

 

Marilyn Maze of Liberty will leave from New York to fly to Switzerland to attend the first world IFYE conference. Maze, who was an exchange youth living in Turkey last summer, is one of a delegation of 18 from Indiana who will attend the conference in Berne.

A 1,050-pound Angus steer shown by 19-year-old Jim Lankford of Martinsville took Grand Champion honors in on-foot judging at the seventh annual Hoosier Beef Show. A 1,130-pound Angus shown by Robert Johnningsmeir of Edwardsport was Reserve Champion.

June graduates of Purdue University’s School of Agriculture have reported starting salaries that average $6,360 a year, compared to a $6,300 average last year. There were 146 graduates this year, of which 94 percent accepted jobs or were virtually committed to positions.

1975: 40 years ago

 

Area county fair queens were recently chosen: for Hancock Coun-ty, Pamela Jordan; Jennings County, Janet Sue Speer; and Bartholomew County, Nancy Patton. All three ladies will compete for the title of Miss Indiana State Fair Queen.

Susan Shoup of Frankfort, Ind., has been named public relations assistant for the American Angus Assoc. She will be in charge of the association’s news release program and take part in the planning of exhibits and displays and feature story writing. Shoup earned her B.S. degree in agricultural communications from the University of Illinois.

James Comer, Barren River Region, was chosen the Kentucky FFA president during its state convention in Louisville. Outgoing President Susan Smitson was the state’s first female to preside over a Kentucky state FFA convention.

Mega-producer Lantland Kit Mopsy, owned by Bella Estancia Holsteins of Zionsville, Ind., became the fifth cow in the world to exceed 50,000 pounds of milk in 365 days or fewer. Mopsy peaked at 249 pounds per day with an average of 138 pounds per day. The milk contained 3 percent protein and 3.3 percent butterfat.

2005: 10 years ago

Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. announced it has begun a $4.2 million remodeling project to enhance the production capabilities of its corn seed plant in Rushville, Ind. When completed, the remodeled bulk seed building will have an increased capacity of 400,000 bushels – up 11 percent from its current capacity.
