By Melissa Hart Are you old enough to remember typing class? And the old electric typewriters? Mr. Robertson was our typing teacher and I looked forward to that class every day. It was different, easy, and competitive. We loved seeing how many words per minute we could achieve. Unfortunately, pride got the best of me, and I wanted to beat everybody, so cheated on the typing test. Who does that? Mr. Roberson caught me, and I can still see his face of disappointment standing over me at my desk. I felt awful and needless to say, his face was all I needed to never cheat on anything again. There was one sentence that we typed over and over again as he clocked us: Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country. That sentence was devised by Charles E. Weller as a typing drill but it’s more fitting as a call to action today. There are folks in our country trying to diminish the value of a two-parent home, the necessity of a father’s influence on his children and that skin color is of the highest value. It is no secret that I believe in the nuclear family and the strength of a country is built by the strength of the family. But today, there is a small group of folks who would like to teach your children to value the opposite of what you are teaching in your home. They come under the guise of being more educated and sophisticated than you. They believe their way is the only way for our nation to be reconciled with our past. They would like to teach your children that by the color of your skin you are either a victim or you are bad. And that our history has made us this way. There is no redemption unless you admit that you are one or the other. They want to shape young minds into what they believe is important, and certainly not the way God created your child to be – unique, gifted and free to grow in the way He made them – embracing skin color, eye shape, and hair texture. Certainly, this is not every school system in the country, but it is prevalent enough for concerned parents to rise up and take note. Now is the time to get off your phone and get into the school board meetings. Now is the time to take note of what your children are studying and how they are being taught. Now is the time to attend meetings, run for local office and get involved. If your community is in great shape, then keep it that way. If your local education system needs some assistance in remembering one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all, then make some noise and follow it up with servant leadership. Do not stand on the sidelines and expect your friends or neighbors to do what you have been called to do in such a time as this. Now is the time for you to step up and volunteer, offer to help and simply be present in your child’s education. If not for your children, do it for those descendants of the men and women who lay in unmarked graves in Gettysburg or Arlington and countless cemeteries across the nation who willingly gave up their lives for us to live in a country that will always be a free republic….if we can keep it. |
