 ABOUT THE TRACTOR
To
celebrate its 55th anniversary, Farm World newspaper will once again
give away a refurbished antique 1955 tractor to one lucky subscriber.
This time, the paper is giving away a 1955 John Deere 60.This
is the second time Farm World has given away a tractor. To celebrate
its 50th anniversary in 2005, Farm World awarded a 1955 Farmall 400
tractor to Ed Evers of Burketsville, Ohio. More than 67,000 chances
were bought on that tractor. Evers was a retired dairyman who had
subscribed to Farm World for more than 30 years. For a chance to win the tractor,
buy or renew a Farm World subscription by 11 a.m., Jan. 20, 2011. For
each year subscription purchased, a subscriber will receive one entry
into the drawing. So, those who subscribe for one year, receive one
entry; subscribe for two years, receive two entries; subscribe for 10
years, get 10 entries.
The John Deere 60 was built
from
1952-57 as an improved successor to the John Deere Model A. Two
innovations introduced with the John Deere 60 were positive crankcase
ventilation, which prevented formation of sludge by drawing clean air
through the crankcase with an air pump; and an automatic fuel shut-off
valve operated by engine oil pressure. When there was no oil pressure,
the flow of fuel to the carburetor was stopped.
The
original
Model 60s retained the same engine as the last of the Model A tractors
with 41.57 belt and 36.94 drawbar horsepower, a bore and stroke of 5
1/2 x 6 3/4 inches, 321 cid, and 1115 RPM. In the 1950s, the cost of a
new Model 60 was $2,500, and the shipping weight was 5,300 pounds.
