FFA Chapter Salute - Rushville FFA
Rushville FFA Chapter
Chapter name: Rushville FFA Chapter
City and state: Rushville, Ind.
Chapter advisor(s) – Mr. Blair Orme and Mr. Travis Harvey
Number of FFA members: 151
Charter date: 1940

History of chapter Chartered in 1940, the chapter has flourished over the years with 151 students currently achieving membership within the organization.
What classes are taught to FFA members? With the guidance of advisors, many agriculture classes are taught at the high school. The classes taught each year include: fundamentals of agriculture, agricultural mechanization/welding, agricultural mechanization/small engines, and supervised agriculture experience/leadership. Horticulture science, animal science, and advanced animal science are also taught and offered as science credit for students. Landscape management, natural resource management, and agribusiness management are offered every other school year. Advanced life science animals and advance life science plant and soil are offered every other year with the possibility of being dual credit courses for credit from Purdue University.

What contests does the chapter participate in? The chapter is extremely busy throughout the year. From practices and contests to chapter activities, something is always going on. We participate in many Career Development Events (CDEs) including crops evaluation, meats evaluation, livestock evaluation, dairy foods evaluation, animal science skill-a-thon, dairy cattle evaluation, and soils evaluation. Within the last two years, the chapter has had four teams who have been able to compete at the national level. We also participate in many leadership contests at the district, state, and even national level. Some of these contests include parliamentary procedure, creed speaking, essay contest, chapter exhibit, extemporaneous speaking, job interview, male and female leadership ambassador, prepared public speaking, traditional scrapbook, multimedia scrapbook, welding, discovery degree contests, and many demonstrations. CDEs are very much a strength of the Rushville FFA Chapter.

Chapter activities: Other chapters activities highly participated in by members are community service projects. Our first project began just this year. When harvest began the chapter wanted to do something for the farmers who are out day and night working to produce the food we eat. With the help of Stewart Seeds, members came together to put together care packages for the farmers in our area. They then proceed to drive around the county distributing the packages to all the farmers who are in the fields. Members always have a great time, and the farmers greatly appreciate it.

Does the chapter have an ag plot? The chapter also holds a 20 acre agriculture plot that is managed by the members. The plot is rotated each year between corn and soybeans. This past year we worked with local fertilizer and seed dealers to make our plot successful.

What is your biggest fundraiser? Fruit is the big fundraiser of the year for the chapter. Selling a large number of cases to gain a large profit is the goal for all chapter members. Each member is asked to sell 10 cases of fruit; some even go to the extent of selling over 200. It’s always a fun competition to see who can sell the most. In 2009, over 2400 cases were sold, and this number increased this year.

Favorite community service project? Another community service activity put on by the chapter is Truck or Treat at Halloween each year. Members of the chapter create a theme, dress up in costumes, and decorate their vehicles for a fun, safe environment for trick-or-treaters. This activity is always greatly participated in, and the community is very thankful for the time and effort put in to it. Also, in the spring of each year the chapter contributes to an agriculture day for fifth graders from all the elementary schools in the county. Members bring in various farm animals and inform the students of different aspects involved in animal production. Community service is very important, as well as fun, for all members of the chapter.

What is your chapter’s strength? Hard work, dedication, and passion. These are the things that have made the chapter successful. With a growing chapter membership each year, more and more members are getting involved and helping to make the chapter the best it can be. The members, along with the wonderful advisors, make the Rushville FFA Chapter a truly unique chapter.
