1956: Bumper crop of corn up to 60 bushel per acre in Indiana

Poultry men at Purdue recommend the lights in the laying house be turned on to stimulate higher egg production during the fall and winter months. Fourteen hours of light is all you need.

A bumper crop average of 60 bushels of corn per acre has been reported in Indiana. This is 4 percent larger than last year and 22 percent above average. Soybean yields are not measuring up to expectations; they are reported at an average of 24.5 bushels per acre, which is 21 percent greater than last year.

Ertle Price and his son, Wayne, shot a wild animal on their farm near Carthage, Ind. It has been identified as a “lent,” an animal similar to a wildcat. The lent measured three feet from nose to tail, was 15-1/2 inches high and weighed 22 pounds.

Truman Sawyer came to the rescue of members of the Cedric Hoban family, who were shucking corn by hand every day this fall and taking their two-year-old baby with them. Sawyer came with his picker and finished picking the corn for them. Hoban is from St. Paul, Ind.

Bear Slide Farms of Cicero, Ind., consigned and sold the top Angus Heifer for $700 at the recent Indiana Angus Cattle Sale at the Marion County Fairgrounds. They also had the top selling steer, at $485.

Edward Barham, Westfield, Ind., announced his resignation from the Indiana State Fair board of directors. Barham was the director in charge of the Horse Department.

A funds campaign has been started to raise $2,000 for Dearborn County resident Leroy Scott of Dillsboro, who recently was the victim of a farming accident, resulting in the loss of both his hands and part of a forearm in a corn picker on his farm. Money will be used to purchase artificial hands and therapy he will need.

National Reserve Grand Champion Shorthorn bull selected at the NAILE was Alexander S3, owned by Granada Shorthorns, Cloverdale, Ind., and Ramsey Shorthorns, Greenfield.

Audra Ellis, 9, Jamestown, Ohio, won Grand Champion hog for her Hampshire/Duroc cross gilt at the North American Livestock Show in Louisville, Ky. In sheep competition, Emily Master, 12, of Marysville, won the junior division (ages 8-12) at the Junior Sheep Show.

West Michigan farmers hit by extreme weather last spring will be able to get emergency loans through the USDA. Those counties eligible are Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Eaton, Hillsdale, Ingham, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Kent, Lake, Lenawee, Livingston, Manis-tee, Mason, Mecosta, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, Osceola, Ottawa, St. Joseph, Van Buren, Washtenaw and Wexford.

The Olney, Ill., FFA Chapter took home the Chapter Grand Prize winnings at the sixth annual Tractor Restoration Competition at the recent National FFA Convention in Louisville. ChevronTexaco Global Lubricants sponsors the event. The chapter restored a 1949 DC3 Case tractor.

W.J. Fannin of Washington Court House, Ohio, took home the Grand Champion Steer spot in the Junior Steer Show, with his 1,330-pound crossbred steer. The show was at the NAILE in Louisville.
