WARSAW, Ind. — Agriculture will be on the agenda when the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission meets at 10 a.m. July 10, in the lower level meeting room of the Justice Building in downtown Warsaw.

The Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) will hear an appeal to building permits issued earlier this year to the Sands Family for two buildings to house an undisclosed number of hogs. Filing the challenge is a group of citizens from Silver Lake who base their appeal on performance standards currently included in the county’s ordinance pertaining to odor emissions.

Both facilities would be constructed on Kosciusko County road 900 S. and approximately 1,000 feet east of State Road in Clay township.

Kelly Heckaman, Purdue University extension educator in Kosciusko County, said, “If the BZA would grant this appeal, this would have far-reaching effects for everyone involved in agriculture in Kosciusko County. It would definitely set precedence for allowing your neighbors to go after any operation in an agriculture zone based on odors.”

Neither the Sands family nor the leader of the concerned citizen group was available for comment at press time.
