2002: Little rain, heat conspire to rob Illinois’ growers of corn

The sale of Claude Fleming and McElroy near New Castle brought in a gross of about $25,000. A 1955 model 400 tractor brought $1,875. Cows and calves were bid at $200; sows and baby pigs brought $70-$100 each, and gilts averaged $47 a head. Corn in the field brought $66 an acre, oats sold for 88 cents and hay, from 55-60 cents. Conway and Son were the auctioneers.

Elmo Redding of near Flora won the two-row division in the state mechanical corn-picking contest on the Arabian Acres farm west of Lewisville. Robert Wright of near Richmond won the one-row event. Mr. Redding went on to win the National Corn Picking contest two-row division held in Sioux Fall, S.D.

Jerry Rulon, 20, a Purdue junior from Hamilton County, is the new national vice president for the central region of the Future Farmers of America. He was elected at the 30th annual FFA convention in Kansas City. He served as past Indiana state FFA secretary in 1955-56 and state president in 1956-57.

40 years ago

Ettas Sleeping Emily, exhibited by Danny Upchurch, New Castle, placed first in the Junior Yearling Heifer Class of the All American Junior Jersey Show. She was one of 27 entries. The Jersey Show was at the Ohio Exposition Center in Columbus.

Jerry Ferguson of DuPont, Ind., was awarded the District 10 Young Farmer award recently during the Farm Bureau’s annual district meeting. Ferguson and his wife, Rose, farm 530 acres in a family farm corporation and have a large swine operation.

James Leedy, Fred Voge and Gene Tapalman, all Preble County, Ohio, FFA members, received the coveted American Farmer degree at the National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Mo. The award was given to only 17 Ohio residents this year, and on the average, only one in 1,000 Ohio FFA members receive the honor.

Half-Century of Success – this marks the 50th year the Hisers have been serving farmers in Ohio. The operation has diverse interests, including raising corn, soybeans, oats, popcorn and hogs. The business began in 1937 by their father on a 950-acre farm on Miletree Road and is now run by brothers Jim and Dick Hiser and their families.

Members of the Tipton, Ind., FFA Chapter recently took first place at the Eastern National Livestock Judging contest in Timonium, Md. Team members included Todd and Scott Ripberger, Lyn Enright and Brad Duncan. The team is coached by George Price, agriculture teacher at Tipton Middle School, and Guy Kirby.

Lack of rain and intense heat during the pollination period caused a lack of kernel development for many Illinois farmers, who are suffering from 5- to 10-bushel corn yield per acre this season. Another concern for the farmers is the rejection at elevators because of aflatoxin contamination.

Indiana farmland is worth more than it was a year ago, with the value of average bare cropland being $2,382 and cash rents $116 per acre.

Five individuals were honored for their support of the Wayne County Fair in Wooster, Ohio, during the Wayne County Fair Board’s annual appreciation dinner. Recognized for their support and involvement in the fair were Ken Miller, Mel Stocksdale, Randall Billman, C.J. McCoy and John Case.
