Yield winners back from Orlando, courtesy of Whayne LOUISVILLE, Ky. — It’s great to receive any award, but when it comes with the impressive title of “Best of the Best,” it’s something special.
Whayne Supply established the “Best of the Best” Award in 2008 to recognize farmers who excel in yearly Kentucky extension yield contests for corn, soybeans and wheat. The contests are administered by the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service and supported by commodity boards and agribusiness.
Whayne honors these recognitions with an all-expense-paid trip for the winner(s) and a companion to an agriculture-related destination or event. This year the winners went to Orlando, Fla., to attend the AG Connect Expo in January.
This year’s winner in two categories was Peterson Farms in Marion County, which took top yield honors in both wheat and soybeans. Peterson Farms includes Bernard, Bill, Albert and David Peterson. Taking home the top yield award for corn was Marcus Huffman, a Logan County farmer. He achieved an impressive yield of 295.56 bushels an acre using no-till. This yield also earned Huffman a third place in the National Corn Yield Contest in a no-till category.

Blake honored by Land O’Lakes Purina in Chicago BROWNSBURG, Ind. — John Blake is one of the most experienced animal health and nutrition experts in the Midwest, and has worked with thousands of producers since the early 1970s. He is a leader on the Co-Alliance LLP Swine and Nutrition team, and his time-proven strategies and ability to match the right products to specific needs have recently earned him a new title: Winner in the Land O’Lakes Purina Feeds 2010 Expedition to Excellence Program. This program is a yearlong sales competition among almost 500 feed sales professionals. Blake placed fifth in the nation, and will be honored for this achievement by Land O’Lakes Purina Feeds at the prestigious Summit Club recognition banquet in Chicago.
Blake credits his success in the Expedition to Excellence program to the quality of the feeds and the basic techniques he shares with his customers, who raise livestock all across Co-Alliance’s three-state territory.
The objective of Expedition to Excellence was for professionals to earn points by increasing sales over last year’s LOLPF feed and animal health volumes. |
