Parkway FFA chapter holds 81st annual FFA banquet
ROCKFORD, Ohio — The Parkway FFA recently held their 81st annual FFA banquet. Family of the FFA members and many guests attended the banquet which was held on April 21 at the Parkway High School. The banquet began at 6:30 p.m. with a toast from the 2009-2010 Parkway FFA President Corbin Hellwarth.

An official welcome was given by the incoming President Abby Evans. Rachel Hesse gave the invocation and then a meal consisting of BBQ pork, fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, noodles, green beans, tossed salad, and dinner rolls was served. The guest speaker for the night was Kylee Fent, the 1999-2000 Parkway FFA president. She spoke about how her years in FFA helped her to get where she is now.

After Fent delivered her speech, the awards portion of the banquet began. The greenhand degree was given to 27 first year members and the chapter degree was given to 15 members. The ten members that sold the most fruit during fruit sales this past year were recognized, and the Scholarship award was given to 31 members for being on the honor roll for 2 of the 3 nine week periods this year. proficiency awards were given to Samantha Beerbower in floriculture and Dee Dee Knapke in sheep production.
Career Development Events (CDE) medals were awarded to students who participated in any CDE, and 39 members received medals. Four members were awarded with plaques for their efforts in receiving their state degrees: Abby Evans, Olivia Houts, Garth Louth, and Zach Searight. Retiring officers who put countless hours into their respective books were given recognition: Danielle Matthews, reporter, Destinee Guggenbiller, secretary and Abby Evans, treasurer. Brian Fortkamp and Garrett and Judy Hellwarth were inducted as honorary members. The Star Greenhand Award went to Claire Burtch and Star Chapter Degree was given to Mark Sheets. Star Three-Year Member and Star Four-Year Member went to Garth Louth and Danielle Matthews. Lastly, the 2010-2011 officers were introduced. The new officer team consists of President Abby Evans; Vice President Caden Hellwarth; Treasurer Seth Houts; Secretary Destinee Guggenbiller; Reporter Olivia Houts; Student Advisor Rachel Hesse; and Sentinel Trevor Eischen.

Indiana Beef awards Sennett scholarship
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indiana Beef Cattle Assoc. (IBCA) recently announced the winner of the annual Sennett Farms Cattle Company Scholarship – Kyle William Jacobs of Shirley, Ind. Jacobs is a graduate of Eastern Hancock High School and will be a junior at Oklahoma State University majoring in animal science.

Jacobs will be recognized at the Indiana State Fair during the Grand Drive on Monday, Aug. 9, in the Pepsi Coliseum. At that time, there will be a formal presentation by the leadership of Indiana’s beef industry.

“We would like to congratulate Kyle for his achievement as well as thank all of the students who participated in the scholarship essay contest,” said Joe Moore, executive vice president of the IBCA. I also would want to thank Clark Sennett for making this scholarship available again this year.’

The annual $500 scholarship is available to residents of Indiana, who are from a family that is actively involved in beef production and are current IBCA members. In addition, applicants must be an existing college student majoring in agriculture or a high school senior planning to major in agriculture at a two or four year university.

Amanda-Clearcreek FFA members dominate contests
On the weekend of March 27, Amanda-Clearcreek (A-C) FFA participated in the state Career Development Events at the Ohio State Fairgrounds.

The A-C Wildlife Management team placed first in the state this year. In this contest, students must have a knowledge and understanding of wildlife. This contest consists of a written test, a practicum, and identification of mammals, game birds, forbs, trees, shrubs, game fish, and equipment. This year the team consisted of Aaron Miller, Alex Norris, Tyler Genders, Hunter Ricketts, Ryan Mundy, Daniel Quincel, Kyle Klingler, and Eddie Johnson. Individually, Aaron Miller placed third in the state, Alex Norris placed tenth and Tyler Genders placed 13th.

The A-C Nature Interpretation team placed fourth in the state. This contest consists of a written test, a practicum, and the identification of mammals, equipment, songbirds, non-woody plants, reptiles, and amphibians. The A-C team consisted of Mike Hite, Nick Brumfield, Ike Sowers, and Seth Johnson. Individually, Mike Hite placed second in the state and Nick Brumfield placed 16th.
These high placing teams qualified the chapter to send a team to participate in the state competition.
