INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Connoisseurs of Indiana’s fine wines can discover and learn more about each of the state’s 46 wineries, thanks to a free iPhone application announced last month by the Indiana Wine Grape Council.

Available on the iTunes app store, the Indiana Winery Guide enables users to map local wineries, obtain directions, view photos and details about their amenities and travel along a wine trail. A special feature of the app showcases Traminette, Indiana’s inaugural signature wine, along with all the wineries that offer it.
“We have a growing wine industry in Indiana and a lot of passionate consumers supporting us,” said Jeanette Merritt, marketing director for the Purdue University-based Indiana Wine Grape Council. “We wanted to give vinophiles a tool to locate more great wineries, and continue to build affinity for Hoosier wines.”

With its wineries selling more than 800,000 gallons of wine annually, Indiana is the 13th-largest wine producing state. Merritt said the new app is designed to make it easy to discover wineries.
The free download, available to any user of Apple iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, will be updated regularly as new wineries open.
The app made its initial appearance in June, just ahead of the annual Vintage Indiana Wine and Food Festival in downtown Indianapolis. Its introduction also celebrated June Wine Grape Month declared by Gov. Mitch Daniels.
