Soybean growers needed for online extension survey
URBANA, Ill. — Extension specialists at the University of Illinois and the University of Wisconsin are interested in discovering the methods soybean producers use to find and share information in light of recent technological and economic change.

Vince Davis, UoI soybean specialist, and Shawn Conley of UW are conducting a survey to investigate the technology soybean growers and agronomic consultants use to find and share production and marketing information. Soybean growers are urged to participate in a brief online survey.

The survey should take less than 10 minutes, but will provide researchers with extremely valuable information, Davis said. The survey is voluntary and information provided will remain anonymous. To participate, go to www.surveymonkey.com/s/soybeangrowercommunications

This research is sponsored by the Illinois and Wisconsin Soybean Operating Boards through the soybean checkoff.

Agritourism conference set for eastern Kentucky
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — The University of Kentucky is cosponsoring a conference later this month aimed at promoting agritourism in eastern Kentucky.

The conference is July 28-30 at the Regional Enterprise Center in West Liberty. It will open with a presentation by Peter Hille of Berea College, who believes it’s crucial for regional leaders to carve a new future for the area and not wait for solutions from outside the region.

On July 29, participants will hear from Todd Comen, who is founder and manager of the Institute for Integrated Rural Tourism. The conference is also cosponsored by the Eastern Kentucky Foothills Eco-Agri-Tourism Corp.

Tower will gauge wind potential in Lake County
LOWELL, Ind. (AP) — A Michigan company has received permission to build a 196-foot-high meteorological tower in northwestern Indiana, to gauge wind strength to determine whether a utility-grade wind farm is feasible in the area.

The Lake County Council voted July 13 to give permission to Windlab to build the tower east of the town of Lowell to conduct the test. Company spokesman David Courtney said testing could last up to three years, but conditions appear favorable.

He also said the state of Indiana should require utilities to generate or buy part of their electricity from renewable energy sources.

Marshall County approves Iowa wind farm
MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) — A proposed wind farm in southern Marshall County has been approved by the county’s board of adjustment.

The board on July 13 approved a special use permit that will allow RPM Access to build a wind farm near Laurel that will generate about 121 megawatts of electricity using approximately 67 turbines. Marshall County’s zoning administrator John Knuc said the special use permit met the requirements of the county’s ordinance.
The permit includes 42 separate conditions related to county roads and other matters of special concern to residents. Federal and state governments requirements also must be met.

Bill Gerhard of the Iowa State Building & Construction Trades Council said construction of the wind towers will be an immediate benefit to the community.
