Miami East FFA Alumni awards scholarship winners

CASSTOWN, Ohio — The Miami East FFA Alumni Chapter recently recognized graduates of Miami East High School that had been enrolled in agricultural education and members of the FFA chapter. In order to qualify for the scholarship, the applicants completed an essay on “The Benefits of Agricultural Education” and had been active in FFA for at least one year. Each recipient received a cash scholarship to be used for their further education.

Sheena Roach is the daughter of Trent and Kerry Roach, of Casstown. She will be attending Wright State University, where she will be majoring in music education.

Lucas Hershberger is the son of Bill and Janie Hershberger, of Troy. He is majoring in education at Edison State Community College.

Seth Coverstone is the son of Mark Coverstone and Brenda Coverstone, of Casstown. He said he enjoyed working with his classmates through hands-on activities throughout his four years of Agricultural Education. He earned his State FFA Degree and attended the State and National FFA Conventions. Seth is proud to be the top fruit salesperson all four years of FFA. He will be attending Sinclair Community College.

Brittney Brookhart had a late start with the Miami East FFA Chapter, as she was only a student for two years. She is the daughter of Jeff and Terry Brookhart, of Tipp City. Brookhart will be attending Wright State University majoring in elementary education.

Katelyn Melvin is the daughter of Michael Melvin and Michele Melvin, of Casstown. She will be attending Wilmington College and majoring in agriculture with the plans of attending veterinarian college.

Kelsey P. Wintrow is the daughter of Bobby and Nancy Wintrow, of Casstown. She plans on attending Wright State University to be a nurse.

The Miami East FFA Alumni was able to provide these scholarship recipients with monies because of the generous donations and support of community members through such projects as the Longaberger Basket Bingo in February and the Silent Auction at the Chapter Banquet in April.

Also, during the week of July 12 to 16, 12 members of the Miami East FFA Chapter attended FFA Camp at Ohio FFA Camp Muskingum. Camp Muskingum is located on Leesville Lake in Carroll County, just south of Carrollton, Ohio.

During the week members competed in many competitions, participated in workshops and team building activities, and met FFA members from across the state. The FFA members took part in leadership training sessions, which were conducted by the current Ohio FFA State Officers. The campers also learned about conservation through a recycling program. While at camp, members donated money towards the “Pie-in-the-Eye” campaign. All proceeds from the activity will go to Children’s Hospital.

Those from Miami East attending were Rick Thimmes, David Long, Josh Furrow, Ceirra Nales, Amanda Bartel, Angelina Henger, Alex Wallace, Katelyn Melvin, Samantha Blevins, Heather Skaggs, Corrine Melvin, and Jenifer Slone. As a special note, Katelyn Melvin attended FFA Camp all four years she was a member of the Miami East FFA Chapter, a first ever for the chapter.
