Illinois 4-H presents State 4-H Key Awards
URBANA, Ill. — The University of Illinois Extension 4-H program recently announced the inaugural class of a new statewide award, the State 4-H Key Award. This new Illinois award program recognizes older 4-H members for their involvement in leadership, community service, and mentorship of younger youth.

The 2010 class recognized 14 teens, including: Kaitlyn Nielson, Belvidere; Matt Nordman, Belvidere; Erica Kopp, Farmer City; Natalie Edwards, White Hall; Cole Fechtig, Burnt Prairie; Rebecca Koltveit, Pontiac; David Harman, Woodstock; Deanna Harman, Woodstock; Allison Parks, Bloomington; Doris Brown, Jacksonville; Shannon Breen, Tuscola; Stephanie Bechard, Freeburg; Elyse Nicholson, Eureka; and Victoria Kronenberg, formerly of Milledgeville.

Eight of the 14 winners were recognized at the 4-H Celebration Banquet held during the Illini Summer Academies event at the University of Illinois in June. Winners received their awards from Robert Hoeft, interim director of U of I Extension, and Denise Legvold, assistant dean and director of Illinois 4-H.

State 4-H Key Award applicants are 16 to 18 years of age and nominated to the state selection process by their local U of I Extension program. Members are scored on their 4-H leadership involvement on the club, county, regional, state, and national level; community service projects; and how they have used their 4-H project expertise to mentor other youth.

Amanda-Clearcreek FFA helps local community
AMANDA, Ohio — The Tarlton Fish Fry is an annual fundraiser for the Tarlton Volunteer Fire Department and this year it was held on Thursday, June 24. Every year for many years now, the Amanda-Clearcreek (A-C) FFA chapter has helped with this fundraiser by setting tables, bringing food to patrons, cleaning up as patrons left and resetting for the next group. This year there were 23 FFA members who helped with the Fish Fry.

On Thursday July 1, eight A-C FFA members helped clean-up the Crossmound Park. The chapter has annually cleaned-up this park for a number of years, usually just general cleanup in the parking lot area, clearing of debris on the trails and repair of the fence that has been protecting the mound since 1995. The park is still closed due to a number of vandalisms within the park. This makes it very difficult for the park director, Dave Fey, to keep up with all of the vandalisms and the A-C FFA chapter does all it can to help restore the park to its proper setting. After the members were done cleaning up, Fey gave everyone a brief talk on the history of the mound.

Throughout the year, the A-C FFA chapter helps out within the community in many different ways. The chapter tries to complete three Adopt-a-Highway cleanups of a three-mile section on St. Rte. 159 and the chapter works with the Amanda Volunteer Fire Department annual holiday food drive, as well as participates in the March-of-Dimes walk in Chillicothe, Ohio.
