Cattlemen recognize industry leaders in Michigan during summer roundup
OKEMOS, Mich. — Five people and an agriculture business were recognized for contributions and dedication to the beef industry during the Michigan Cattlemen’s Assoc. (MCA) Summer Round-Up.

MCA’s Member of the Year was awarded to Dale Oeschger from Bay Port; Agribusiness of the Year went to BioZyme, Inc., Bret Schapman from Almont received the Young Producer of the Year award; Phil and Chris Rottman from Fremont received Purebreed Breeder of the Year; and Cattle Businessman of the Year went to Quentin Harwood from Ionia.

Oeschger and his wife, Linda, and their family have a 600-head feedlot; in addition they grow approximately 1,000 acres of corn, alfalfa, navy beans, wheat, soybeans and sugar beets. In 2001 he was appointed to the Michigan Beef Industry Commission and serves as secretary; he has also been appointed to the National Cattlemen’s Beef Assoc. Joint Product Enhancement Committee.

BioZyme has been a leader in the fields of animal nutrition and microbiology for more than 50 years, and offers a complete line of high density, highly available vitamin, mineral, trace mineral and protein supplements for several animal species.

Schapman grew up on the family farm in Romeo and graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in animal science. At Ingleside Farms, he manages the environmental program, which includes a comprehensive nutrient management plan.

The Rottmans manage and market their seedstock operation, guided by history and lifetime experiences in cattle breeding. Along with private treaty sales, they market their progeny through the Michigan Beef Expo, the MCA/MSU Bull Test Sale, MSU Fall Fest, West Branch Bull Sale and the Autumn Alliance sale.

Harwood is the fourth generation involved with the beef industry in his family. The diversified cattle enterprise has included a commercial and purebred cow-calf herd, annual purebred production sales, feedlot finishing, stocker backgrounding, an annual club calf sale and years ago, a livestock auction sale barn. Harwood Cattle Co. has locations in Ionia, Marion and Clare.
