Pork donation to feed east-central Indiana’s hungry
MUNCIE, Ind. — Indiana Pork, in partnership with Feeding Indiana’s Hungry, Inc. and the Indiana Soybean Alliance, is donating 7,500 pounds of ground pork to the Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana. It is the second delivery earmarked for east central Indiana.

The pork donation is part of an ongoing campaign for Indiana pork producers, industry partners, friends and the general public to fund a program to donate pork products to Hoosiers experiencing hunger. This initiative is designed to help thousands of families with one of their most essential needs: High-quality protein.

The goal of the campaign is to provide one million ground pork meals per year, throughout the year, to those in need. These pork meals will be distributed statewide through the 11 food bank members of Feeding Indiana’s Hungry, Inc., Indiana’s statewide network of food banks.

Plans move forward for wind turbines in Michigan & Ohio
BRECKENRIDGE, Mich. (AP) — A company is moving forward with plans to build 125 wind turbines near Breckenridge in Gratiot County, Mich.

Invenergy Wind announced last week that the 30,000-acre wind farm is expected to be operating by late 2011, about 100 miles northwest of Detroit. It will have the capacity to power nearly 54,000 homes. Invenergy says it will be the largest wind farm in the state. Invenergy Wind is affiliated with Chicago-based Invenergy LLC.
Detroit-based DTE Energy Co.’s Detroit Edison subsidiary plans to buy power from the wind farm.

In Ohio, Lake Erie Energy Development Corp. has tapped three companies to build turbines for the world’s first freshwater wind farm several miles offshore from Cleveland.

The nonprofit announced earlier this month the companies are San Francisco-based Bechtel Development Co., Inc., Cavallo Great Lakes Ohio Wind, LLC out of Houston, Texas, and Great Lakes Wind Energy, LLC in Youngstown, Ohio.

Earlier this year, Lake Erie Energy and General Electric Co. announced plans to build five wind turbines about six miles north of the Cleveland Browns stadium. Construction on the 20-megawatt turbines is scheduled to start in late 2012.

Produce auction brings bulk buying to the public
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Nashville Farmers’ Market is now home to a semiweekly produce auction, giving consumers the opportunity to buy sizable quantities of fresh picked produce. Farm Fresh Auctions are Tuesdays and Thursdays, with bidding starting at 10 a.m.

Buying by the box, bushel or peck can be less expensive than buying by the pound, and with practice, a savvy customer can come away with a bargain. Auction founder Anthony Cherry got commitments from area producers to bring a portion of their produce to the Nashville market in bulk, then formed the Farm Fresh Auction Co.
