Hoosier Ag Today awards 4-H communications scholarship
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indiana 4-H Congress brings together top 4-H youth for leadership training and for the awarding of $35,000 in scholarships. Sponsored by CountryMark and Ice Miller LLP, the program presents awards in a variety of achievement categories.

Hoosier Ag Today (HAT) recently sponsored the communications scholarship, which was awarded to Katherine Gambill from Vigo County, a 4-Her with plenty of experience. She has shown swine and been a 4-H camp counselor and junior director.

“I was also involved in a mentor program that brought inner-city kids out to our farm to learn about swine production,” she said.
The high school senior said her 4-H experience has changed her life, “I am a lot more confident. Being a leader in different clubs, and getting up on stage for Share the Fun, and just being able to talk to people has made me a lot more confident.”

“Agriculture is in need of good communicators to help tell the story of modern food production and of the value of our rural communities,” said Gary Truitt, president of Hoosier Ag Today. An excellent communicator, Kit, as she prefers to be called, hopes someday to work in the United Nations and feels her 4-H experience will be quite valuable.

This is the second year that HAT has sponsored the communications scholarship.  When the National 4-H Congress was discontinued in 1994, Indiana began its own state congress to provide leadership training and recognition of achievements to the state’s outstanding 4-Hers.
