Indiana FFA Foundation announces board officers

TRAFALGAR, Ind. — The Indiana FFA Foundation announced four officers have been elected (pictured at right). They are President Joey Martin (Tri-County High School, IAAE – Wolcott), Vice President Summer Goldman (Farm Credit Services of Mid-America – Grandview), Secretary Matt Macaluso (Keller Macaluso LLC – Indianapolis) and Treasurer Bryan Webb (Pace American Enterprises - Middlebury).

They are a part of an 18-person board that meets quarterly to set policies and the overall direction for foundation, as well as assist in garnering funding to support the association.

Jordan and Aumann are 2010 Champion Auctioneers

MIDDLETON, Wis. — Ryan Jordan of Pana, Ill., was chosen Illinois’ Best Bidcaller at the annual contest at the Illinois State Fair. From 20 outstanding bidcallers, Jordan was chosen by a judging panel of five members of the National Auctioneers Assoc.

Other winners were Reserve Champion Keith Jones of Arlington Heights; First Runner-Up Jon Bloomberg of Orion; Second Runner-Up Alex Belcher of Buncome; and Van Adkisson of Roseville. Rounding out the top eight were Shane Rogers of Greenview, Darrell Moore of Winchester and Marc Stauter of Pana.
Tucker Aumann of Nokomis was named winner of the Second Annual Junior Auctioneer Contest.

Jordan is a second-generation auctioneer who grew up working for his father Glen Jordan, owner of Jordan Auction Service. This was his third trip to the contest and he received fourth place in 2009. He was also the 2009 ISAA Novice Bid-Calling Champion.

Aumann is a third-generation auctioneer following in the footsteps of his father, Kurt, and grandfather, Nelson. He works weekends at Aumann Auctions and helps with photography. He is a junior at Nokomis High School and won a state FFA award for salesmanship.
Both will compete in the International Auctioneers Championship next July in Orlando, Fla.

Ohio’s top conservation farmers honored

LONDON, Ohio — Ohio’s top conservation farm families for 2010 were honored for their longstanding dedication to natural resource conservation on the land they farm during ceremonies at the Farm Science Review.

The annual award is sponsored by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Soil and Water Resources, Ohio Farmer magazine and Ohio Farm Bureau Federation (OFBF). Among the families honored were John Buck from Marion County, Eugene and Dean Welch of Ashland County, Stanley and Rick Moore of Harrison County, the Kinney Family of Logan County and Martha Gerber Rittinger of Ross County.

In addition to receiving $400 each from the OFBF, the families were featured in the September issue of Ohio Farmer and received plaques from Hancor, Inc. Nominations are sought annually between January and May.

ISA announces winners of 200-hour tractor leases

ANKENY, Iowa — The Iowa Soybean Assoc. (ISA) announced the winners of its Opportunity Sweepstakes on Sept. 30.

Steve Prybil of Riverside won a 200-hour John Deere 8320R tractor lease and Craig Sage of Waterloo won a 200-hour Case IH Magnum 335 tractor lease. Both Prybil and Sage also won $1,500 worth of soy biodiesel to fuel their tractors.

Almost 2,000 Iowa soybean farmers registered for the chance to win a tractor lease either online or at this year’s Farm Progress Show in Boone. Along with registering for the possibility of a new tractor, everyone who signed up became a member of the ISA.
Cornish is Endowed Chair in Bio-based Materials at OARDC
WOOSTER, Ohio — Katrina Cornish, an internationally recognized expert on alternative natural rubber, has been selected as Endowed Chair in Bio-based Emergent Materials at Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CFAES).
Cornish will hold a joint appointment with the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science and the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering. She will lead a multidisciplinary team in the creation of innovative industrial materials from plant-based sources and associated biological, chemical and physical processes.

She will also be charged with training new scientists and engineers for the emerging global bio-based economy.

Before joining OARDC, Cornish served as senior vice president of research and development for Yulex, which commercializes rubber and other industrial products made from guayule, a plant native to the Southwest.

A native of Beccles, England, Cornish holds a Ph.D. in plant biology from the University of Birmingham and several awards.

Stone named to National Organic Board by Vilsack

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Mac Stone of Georgetown, executive director of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s marketing office, is one of five people appointed by USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack to the National Organic Standards Board.

Stone was named executive director of the department’s Office of Agriculture Marketing and Product Promotion in March 2008. He joined the department in October 2004 as director of the Division of Value-Added Plant Production.

Stone and his wife own and manage Elmwood Stock Farm, a certified organic farm near Georgetown, where they produce vegetables, tobacco, Angus cattle for seed stock, organic beef, lamb and organic-raised pastured poultry. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Kentucky.

Stone and the other four appointees will serve from 2011-16..
