Herefords from President Johnson’s LBJ Ranch won blue ribbons at the Gillespie County Fair recently. The ribbons were for the grand champion get of sire in the Hereford division, showing four animals of both sexes sired by the same bull.

1974

Cattlemen storing beef on the hoof! The build-up of cattle herds was confirmed by a recent USDA survey, which showed on-hand an estimated at 138.3 million animals – 7.4 million more than previous year. The department also estimated the calf crop at 51 million, a new record, which is 2 million more than last year.

According to production estimates released by the USDA, Indiana farmers face a loss of nearly $500 million on this year’s harvest of corn and soybeans, due to the spring rains which delayed planting, followed by the long drought.

A poultry plant south of Connersville, Ind., was destroyed by fire, with damage estimated at $50,000. Approximately 12,000 chickens valued at $2 each and several cases of eggs were destroyed. Owner of the chickens is Pullet Unlimited. The cause of fire is undetermined.

1989

Ohio Pork Producers Council representatives from Shelby, Green and Clinton counties recently barbecued more than 300 whole pork loins for some 180 Ohio State University coaches, players, managers and trainers, according to Dave Gerber of Washington Court House, district swine specialist for the Ohio Cooperative Extension Service. The event was staged outside St. John Arena in the shadow of Ohio.

J. Whey Meranda, George-town, exhibited the best and largest watermelon in the Ohio State Fair’s junior division. The watermelon weighed 83.5 pounds and sold for $1,675 at the ag/horticulture auction.

Alan Kemper, a corn grower from Lafayette, Ind., was elected as the new president of the National Corn Growers Assoc. Kemper farms a 1,500-acre operation in west-central Indiana, where he grows corn and soybeans.
