An Illinois farm bureau chapter hosts farmers’ share breakfast

By TIM ALEXANDER

PEORIA, Ill. — The Peoria County Farm Bureau’s (PCFB) public relations committee sponsored its annual Farmer’s Share of the Food Dollar breakfast on Saturday, March 10 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Peoria.

Hundreds of area farmers and residents enjoyed a breakfast of pancakes, whole hog sausage, fresh eggs and Prairie Farms milk and orange juice, served from 7-11 a.m. by PCFB volunteers.
The cost for those attending the breakfast was a only 50 cents. That price was based on the farm value of the wheat in two pancakes, butter, the corn in syrup, two eggs, two 2-ounce links of whole hog sausage, an 8-ounce glass of milk and an 8-ounce glass of orange juice, according to information provided by the PCFB.

Along with the breakfast, consumers were able to see local farm photos taken and displayed by PCFB members, purchase products made from soybean oil and corn products and bid on silent auction items to raise funds for the PCFB Foundation.
Children were given ABC’s of Agriculture coloring books and ag maps.

Candles from soybeans made from a locally grown product were offered, along with cleaners and soap made from corn and soybeans and other products.

On Saturday morning, the line for the breakfast, while moving briskly, stretched out the front doors of the Knights of Columbus Hall and onto the sidewalk.

Jim Johnston of Peoria, who lives a few blocks from the hall, brought his extended family to the breakfast.

“I wouldn’t miss it,” said Johnston, who was educating his grandchildren Marissa Johnson, 9, Nicholas Krus, 2, and Cameron Krus, 7, about the importance of farming to the community and how agriculture affects their lives.

Prairie Farms Dairy of Peoria donated the milk and juice for the breakfast.

Peoria’s Raber Packing provided and cooked the sausage, AgLand FS donated the LP gas and the Princeville Lions Club prepared the pancakes.
