Youth excel in Indiana 4-H Dairy Skillathon INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The 10th annual 4-H Dairy Skillathon recently took place at the Indiana State Fair, providing an educational opportunity for dairy youth from across the state. The objectives of the skillathon were to provide a learning laboratory to enhance knowledge of the dairy industry, gain self-confidence and skills in one-on-one communication, and to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. This year 4-Hers competed in a junior division and completed 4-6 stations on such topics as, identifying feedstuffs, parts of the foot, manure management, reading pedigrees, parts of the dairy cow, udder preparation, DHIA records, reproduction, and equipment identification. 2007 winners include: 1st – Emma Hopkins, Zionsville; 2nd – Emma Eckrote, Macy; 3rd – Rachel Stohlman, Ligonier; 4th – Caleb Martin, New Carlisle; 5th – Lukus Troyer, Albion; 6th – Kyle Eischen, Greenfield; 7th – John Trenshaw, Goshen; 8th – Shelby Nierman, Brownstown; 9th – Timothy Stohlman, Ligonier; and tied for 10th – Jeffrey Martin, New Carlisle, and Cameron Kline, Goshen. Each of these winners received a monetary award sponsored by Milk Promotion Services of Indiana. Two Kentucky youths chosen to lead national conference LEXINGTON, Ky. — Each year, 12 teens are chosen from across the United States to help plan and lead the National 4-H Conference in Washington, D.C. This year two Kentucky 4-Hers are a part of that team. Jonathan Carmen, current 4-H state vice president, is one of the two youths who will represent Kentucky at the 2008 National 4-H Conference. Carmen has been involved in 4-H for more than 10 years. He plans to attend Bluegrass Community and Technical College in the spring, majoring in U.S. history and economics. Sabrina Hounshell, former 4-H state secretary, is the second youth chosen to represent Kentucky at the National 4-H Conference. She is a 2007 graduate of Lafayette High School in Lexington and the recipient of several scholarships. Hounshell is attending University of Kentucky this fall to study agricultural communications. The National 4-H Conference gathers approximately 200 4-H members from across the country, to brainstorm about topics that are important to teens. They narrow their ideas down to three to five key issues and present them to the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture during a formal ceremony at the end of the conference. Ft. Wayne 4-H recognized at Indiana State Fair INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Kris McKay of Woodburn, Robert McIntosh of Hoagland, and Frank Ebetino of Fort Wayne, Ind. were recognized Sat., Aug. 11 at the Indiana State Fair for their years as 4-H volunteer leaders in Allen County. Each year the Indiana 4-H Foundation and the State 4-H Office at Purdue University recognize the outstanding contributions of these adult volunteers in helping to make the 4-H program a success across the state on Indiana. McKay, a 25-year volunteer serves as a 4-H resource leader. McIntosh, a 25-year volunteer works with the 4-H Shooting Sports program. Ebetino, a 20-year volunteer also works with the 4-H Shooting Sports Program. Other Indiana 4-H leaders recognized, but not able to attend the event at the State Fair include: Norman Berning of Hoagland, 30 years; Danelle Emenhiser of Hoagland, 25 years; Dale Jackson of Fort Wayne, 25 years; Michael Brandell of Fort Wayne, 20 years; Chris Kendall of Hoagland, 20 years and Jon Smith of Fort Wayne, 20 years.
