John Deere collectors gather at Indiana sale

DOVER, Ind. — Sunny skies brought high temperatures and serious buyers to the John Deere collector auction in Dover, Ind. for the family of Ralph Johnson and his wife, Connie.
Johnson had spent the last 15 years accumulating his collection before deciding to disperse it on July 19. To Johnson, it was the last show as the tractors lined the front lawn and drive of their home.

Although it was a small crowd of bidders, the ones who were in attendance showed early on in the one-hour auction that they were there for a reason. Up for auction was a very professionally restored set of John Deere (JD) tractors and garden tractors along with some garden tractor implements.

Some items of interest were a JD 430 standard, which went to Memphis, Tenn. for a hammered-down price of $9,000, an unrestored JD 520 for a sum of $4,000, a model B for $3,500, and four old-style JD model 110 garden tractors ranging in prices from $1,350 to $1,550 each.

Also a few attachments for the garden tractors such as a Brinly one-row corn planter for $275, a Brinly one-bottom plow for $125, a JD No. 80 yard cart for $325, a 4-foot fertilizer spreader for $225, and a set of wheel weights for $100.

The Johnson auctioneer team consisting of Roger, Susan and Chuck Johnson handled the auction. They attribute the success of the auction to ads in Farm World, Green magazine and the Lawn and Garden Collector magazine.

The ads drew interest from 13 states and Canada. During the auction, there were phone bidders from Kentucky and Michigan. For information on this auction and future auctions, e-mail the Johnson auctioneers at bidcaller@etczone.com
