Jennings tabbed as new Illinois agriculture director

By TIM ALEXANDER
Illinois Correspondent

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Tom Jennings was named as director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) Oct. 8 by Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Jennings, a farmer from Springfield, had held the position of acting director since March, when former director Chuck Hartke resigned because of family health concerns.

Prior to his term as acting director, Jennings served as IDOA’s assistant director. He’s also served as IDOA chief of staff, manager of the agriculture industry regulation division and bureau chief of warehouses. After graduating from the University of Illinois with a degree in agricultural economics, Jennings began his career with IDOA as a grain warehouse examiner in 1978.

“Tom has worked for (IDOA) his entire career and knows the agency and its responsibilities as well as anyone,” Blagojevich stated. “His 30 years of experience as a front-line employee, agency administrator and acting director are tremendous assets.”
An Illinois Farm Bureau (IFB) spokesman said he enjoyed a close working relationship with Jennings in his role as acting director, and supported the promotion.

“We’re very pleased that Tom has been appointed permanent director for the (IDOA), and we will continue our excellent working relationship with him on all ag issues impacting Illinois farmers,” said John Hawkins, IFB communications director.

Art Bunting, Illinois Corn Growers Assoc. president from Dwight, lauded Jennings’ appointment, citing his “strong and proven” record with IDOA.

“(Jennings) knows the industry, the stakeholders and the issues extremely well. During his career he has played a key role in helping IDOA and the agriculture industry face numerous challenges. He has always taken a no-nonsense approach and met them head-on.

“We look forward to continuing our positive relationship and working with him in his new role.”

In a prepared statement announcing his selection, Jennings said he understood the challenges and rewards of agriculture and its importance to the state’s economy.

“We are a leading producer of crops such as corn and soybeans and also a leading producer of livestock. In addition, we are one of the top states for exports, making agriculture a key component to the bottom line here in Illinois,” he said. “I am honored to be named to this position and I would like to thank the Governor for this tremendous opportunity.”

Jennings also serves as a board member of the Illinois Propane Education and Research Council and is a past member of the Agri-Business Committee of the Illinois CPA Society. He is the chairman of the Fertilizer Research and Education Council.

He resides with his wife and two children on their farm, where they raise cattle, horses, forage and row crops.
