OSCF announces scholarship opportunity
WORTHINGTON, Ohio – The Ohio Soybean Council Foundation (OSCF) is pleased to announce several scholarship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, who are pursuing degrees related to the science and technology of agriculture at Ohio colleges and universities. These scholarships are designed to promote the application of science and technology to agricultural industries, and to support the development of the bioproducts industry within Ohio.

Five undergraduate scholarships will be awarded, four of up to $3,000 each and one of $5,000. The $5,000 Bhima Vijayendran Scholarship is named to honor Dr. Vijayendran’s contributions to the soybean industry through his scientific research and commercialization activities. Undergraduate scholarship applicants must be Ohio residents, enrolled as full-time students at an Ohio college or university, having attained at least sophomore status by the fall of 2010, with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in their major field. Eligible majors include biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, biotechnology, bioenergy, biofuels, crop science, food science, agricultural communications, agricultural business, and any of the agriculture disciplines or related fields. Applicants must also demonstrate the desire to pursue a career focused on the application of science and technology to agriculture.

Two scholarships of up to $5,000 each are available to graduate students who are enrolled as a full-time student at an Ohio college or university, and have proof of legal residency in the United States. Applicants must be conducting research in bioproducts, biobased materials, bioengineering, biopolymers or a related field, and focused on the development and use of biobased products and materials derived from soybeans.

The OSCF scholarships will be competitively awarded with funds paid directly to the educational institution. Scholarships are not renewable, although recipients may reapply. The deadline for applications is Jan. 15, 2010.

Miami East FFA members attend national convention

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — “Lead Out Loud.” was the theme of this year’s National FFA Convention. Several members of the Miami East FFA were in attendance. Those members included Hannah Allen, Samantha Blevins Brittney Brookhart, Brady Davis, Josh Furrow, Morgan Jess, Steven Hall, Emily Johnson, Kasie Karnehm, Shelby Long, Katelyn Melvin, Corey Rindler and Brady Schindel.

Attending for a Day Trip was Amanda Bartel, Brooke Combs, Sam Everett, Shane Kingrey, David Long, Meagan McKinney, Corrine Melvin, Amber Owen, Sheena Roach, Heather Skaggs, Dylan Taylor, Montana Woolley, and Aliyah Wright.

More than 55,000 members, parents, and guests were in attendance at the National FFA Convention. This is the second of seven conventions to be held in Indianapolis. Previous conventions were held in Kansas City, Mo. and Louisville, Ky.

Activities that the members participated in included touring the Pioneer Processing Plan in Tipton, Ind., where students learned about the processing of seed wheat, corn and soybean. Students toured the Tyson Fresh Meats Plant in Logansport, Ind., where they learned about the safety and production of pork. They toured the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and National Starch in Indianapolis, where they learned about the production and uses of corn starch.
They also attended several convention sessions were they where inspired by motivational speakers such as the 2008-2009 National FFA Officers and Mike Rowe, host of the Discovery Channel’s “Dirty Jobs.”

Miami East FFA received a Two-Star National Chapter Award, an award bestowed to selected FFA chapters. Miami East was selected for this honor based on its activities during the previous school year, in the areas of student, chapter and community development.
