MSU Extension honors 4-H youth at basketball game
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Young people, their families and volunteer leaders with Michigan State University Extension (MSUE) 4-H Youth Development will cheer on the MSU women’s basketball team as they take on The Ohio State University Buckeyes, Jan. 9 at the MSU Breslin Center. “MSUE 4-H Day with the Lady Spartans” is a celebration of the MSUE 4-H program.

Tickets are free for 4-H members, volunteers, MSUE staff members and their families. To order tickets, contact your MSUE county office at 1-888-MSUE-4MI (1-888-678-3464).

This year’s women’s basketball celebration will pay special tribute to Michigan 4-H nutrition, health and well-being programs.

There will be activities and displays to help Michigan residents make smart food choices, learn about nutrition and apply what they learn, manage their food budget, manage chronic diseases, prevent disease and improve their overall physical, mental and social well-being.

Besides learning about health and nutrition, 4-H’ers will also sing the national anthem and lead the 4-H pledge before the game. There will be an opportunity to get photos with Sparty, the MSU cheerleaders and possibly the Lady Spartans. Attendees are asked to show off their 4-H/MSUE pride by wearing their green or white 4-H or MSUE apparel.

The game starts at 2 p.m.; the doors will be open for the MSUE 4-H group at noon and for the general public at 12:30 p.m. MSUE and 4-H attendees should enter the Breslin Center at Gate D.

Transportation may be coordinated through your county MSUE office. Parking is free for all school buses; all other buses are $20. Car parking costs $5.

Southmont FFA wins state crops contest
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Southmont FFA senior crops judging teams placed first and fifth at the State Crops Contest at Purdue on Saturday Dec. 12, giving the school its 21st state title in crops judging.

There were 47 teams and 179 individuals in the contest. The first place team members were Lagora Paxton, Jeremiah Anderson, Will Moser and Trey Wilbur. The fifth place team members were Emily Overpeck, Eleri Vice, Courtney Redenbaugh, and Ashley Kincaid. Cameron Braziel and Brody Pickett also represented Southmont as individuals.  Each member of the state champion team will receive a $500 scholarship given by the Southmont FFA Chapter, and Lagora Paxton will receive an additional $500 scholarship from the Purdue University Agronomy department for placing first individually. 

The Southmont FFA Junior High Crops teams received third and fourth. There were a total of 11 junior teams and 45 individuals. The team members on the third place team were Cory Hutchison, John Newton, Caleb Coffing and Natalee Brann. The fourth place team consisted of Brooke McDaniel, David McClure, Megan Kincaid and Andrew Chapai.

The Southmont senior team had four members in the top 10 at the contest. Lagora Paxton placed first with 955 points out of a total of 1000, Jeremiah received second with 952 points, Will Moser placed eighth, Trey Wilbur placed 10th, Courtney Redenbaugh placed 20th, and Emily Overpeck placed 22nd.

The junior team had six members in the top 13 at the contest. Corey Hutchison received second, John Newton placed seventh, Caleb Coffing placed tenth, Natalee Brann placed 11th, Brooke McDaniel placed 12th and David Mclure received 13th.

Crops’ judging requires participants to identify 25 crop and weed plant specimens out of a list of 65; 25 weed and crop seeds out of a list of 69 that are common in Indiana. They also learn to grade eight grain samples according to the U.S. grain grading standards and recognize grain diseases and damage factors that might lower grain quality and, therefore, market value. The final part of the contest consists of a multiple choice quiz over weed control, crop production practices, and pesticide application techniques common in Indiana.

The members worked very hard this year staying after school for 2 hours every day during the season. The senior team won every contest this year continuing Southmont’s winning tradition.  During the last 31 years Southmont has won the State contest 21 times and placed 2nd in the state 7 times.

Ohio Sheep awards youth at symposium
COLUMBUS, Ohio — During the Buckeye Shepherd’s Symposium Award’s Program on Dec. 12, the Ohio Sheep Improvement Assoc. recognized three young people for receiving special recognition over the past year in the area of sheep production and management.
Linsey Howell of Knox County was this year’s recipient of the Ralph Grimshaw Memorial Scholarship Award. Howell was selected by the Ralph Grimshaw Memorial Scholarship Committee at the Ohio State Fair. Howell received a $1,000 scholarship and is attending The Ohio State University majoring in animal sciences with a minor in business.

The Ralph Grimshaw Memorial Scholarship Award funds come primarily from the silent auction that is held during the Buckeye Shepherd’s Symposium. We want to thank all of those that have contributed to this scholarship fund over the past several years. Jacci Erwin of Union County has been named as the State FFA State Sheep Proficiency award winner in 2009, and has also been named the National FFA Sheep Proficiency award winner. Erwin is attending The Ohio State University and is an animal sciences major.

Amy Frost of Fayette County has been named as the 2009 State 4-H Sheep Achievement award winner. Frost has also served as an Ohio Lamb and Wool Queen representing the Ohio Sheep Improvement Assoc. Frost is attending The Ohio State University and is an animal sciences major.

Co-Alliance will award local scholarships
AVON, Ind. — For the third consecutive year, Co-Alliance LLP, will offer $20,000 in academic scholarships to area students. The large Midwestern cooperative partnership, which specializes in energy and agribusiness products and services, created the Solutions Scholarship program to benefit the children and grandchildren of their cooperative member-owners. Since 2008, approximately $46,000 in awards have been presented to students.

Co-Alliance is a partnership of Midland Co-op, IMPACT Co-op, LaPorte County Co-op, Frontier Co-op and Excel Co-op. The company operates facilities in Indiana, Ohio and Michigan.
The one-time Solutions Scholarship awards are for $1,000 each, and are designed for those high school seniors who intend to study agriculture-related fields. Co-Alliance CEO Kevin A. Still views the investment as another example of the company’s commitment to community and also to rural youth.

“Especially in challenging economic times, we feel it is so important to give back. We’re particularly pleased to support the academic efforts of tomorrow’s ag leaders,” he said.
