Indiana Soybean Alliance awards agriculturalists for extra effort

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indiana Soybean Alliance (ISA) recently awarded four Hoosiers for their tireless support and above-and-beyond work to promote Indiana agriculture in 2009 with Beyond the Fence awards.

ISA President Doug Morrow, of Marion, Ind., presented the awards during the Indiana Livestock, Forage and Grain Forum on Jan. 15 in Indianapolis. According to Morrow, the Beyond the Fence awards honor farmers and industry representatives for taking that extra step to help the non-farm public better understand modern agriculture.

“Most people don’t understand how we farm today, and these awards are a way to say thanks to people who go beyond the fence to help educate the non-farm public,” said Morrow.

“It is very important to agriculture that we continue to show consumers how and why we farm the way we do today.”

For outstanding service to the agriculture industry, Stacy Herr, of Richmond, Ind., an ag educator in Wayne County; Loran and Kathy Wilson, beef producers from Orleans, Ind., Bob Krouse, CEO of Midwest Poultry Services, of Mentone, Ind., and the Shelby County Ag Promotion Committee, received 2009 Beyond the Fence awards.
Herr received the award for Outstanding Support to Indiana Farmers. Through her work as an educator, Herr helped community members and leaders in Wayne County to more clearly understand modern farming is based on sound science.

The Wilsons were honored for Outstanding Neighbor Relations by a Farmer. As beef producers, the Wilsons have recognized that the best way to teach the non-farm public about farming is to get them on the farm, according to Morrow. Last year, they hosted an open house so their neighbors could learn a little about what goes on at their farm.

Krouse received the award for Outstanding Community Relations by a Farmer.

“As one of the largest egg producers in the Midwest, Krouse’s work not only impacts his community by providing hundreds of jobs, but his company also donates millions of eggs to the local food bank each year,” said Jane Ade Stevens, of ISA. “Krouse also worked with the local Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) station to produce a video on egg production for schools to use when field trip funding was cut from school budgets.”

Finally, the Shelby County Ag Promotion Committee received a Beyond the Fence award for an Outstanding Program to Support Indiana Agriculture. Each March, this group hosts the Taste of Shelby County in order to invite hundreds of community members, including the chamber of commerce and local government officials to learn about agriculture in the county. Additionally, this event raises money for scholarships, farm safety days and numerous other agriculture education programs.
