Birkey receives Excellence in Extension Award
MARSHALL, Mich. — Ned Birkey of Michigan State University extension was awarded the Excellence in Extension Award at the Michigan Soybean Assoc. 36th Annual Meeting of members. The non-annual award was presented by the Michigan Soybean Promotion Committee (MSPC).

Birkey is an extension agriculture and natural resources educator in Monroe County. He’s received many awards during his career and was selected to meet then-President Ronald Reagan in 1986 as part of the hay-lift effort to the drought-stricken southeastern United States. He also served five years in the U.S. Army, ending as a Finance Branch Officer.

Birkey was raised on a 178-acre livestock and dairy farm in north-central Illinois. He studied at Western Illinois University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics in 1973. By 1988, he received a Master of Science in Agricultural Education with an emphasis in Agriculture Economics at the University of Illinois.

Soybean research program elects officers
ANKENY, Iowa — The North Central Soybean Research Program (NCSRP) recently announced its newly elected directors. Ed Cagney of Kalamazoo County, Mich., was elected president.

Cagney has been with NCSRP since 2006. He raises soybeans, corn, wheat, oats, snap beans and sweet corn on his fourth-generation farm. He has been appointed to the Michigan Soybean Promotion Committee since 1997.

Trevor Glick of Columbus, Ind., was elected vice president. Glick is chair of the Indiana Soybean Alliance’s Research and Uses Committee. In a partnership with his brother, he raises soybeans, corn and wheat.

Mike Cerny of Sharon, Wis., was elected secretary/treasurer. He runs an operation of corn, soybeans and winter wheat. Cerny is president of the Wisconsin Soybean Marketing Board, a member of his local township planning and zoning board and a member of the University of Wisconsin’s Integrated Pest and Crop Management Technical Advisory Committee.

Studebaker promoted at FCS of Mid-America
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Amy Studebaker has been named regional vice president of Financial Services for Farm Credit Services of Mid-America, a $15 billion ag lending cooperative serving more than 85,000 farmers throughout Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana and Tennessee.

Studebaker will oversee five sales offices in the Indianapolis area. She previously worked as an associate vice president of Financial Services for Farm Credit in southwestern Ohio. She holds a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from The Ohio State University.
She is a member of the Mid-America Council of Cooperatives and a volunteer for the 4-H in Preble County, Ohio. She also received the 2010 Young Professional Achievement Award from OSU’s College of Agriculture.

Bischoff receives Conservation Legislator Award
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indiana Assoc. of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (IASWCD) presented the Conservation Legislator Award to a state representative who has been a longtime friend of Indiana’s Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

The award was given to Rep. Bob Bischoff (D-Greendale) on Jan. 13 and recognizes him for working tirelessly for conservation and the protection of Indiana’s natural resources. Bischoff represents House District 68, which includes the counties of Dearborn, Franklin, Ohio, Ripley and Switzerland. He has served in the House almost 20 years.

As chair of the House Natural Resources Committee, he has been a supporter and advocate for the numerous conservation issues brought forth by districts. During the 2009 session, he sponsored legislation to clarify and strengthen the Clean Water Indiana language and form an Invasive Species Council.
