Pettisville FFA Alumni announces scholarships PETTISVILLE, Ohio — Lucas Nofziger of the Pettisville FFA is the 2010 Pettisville FFA Alumni college scholarship recipient. This scholarship is given to a Pettisville FFA member to assist them in their continuing studies of agriculture. Nofziger is attending OSU-ATI in Wooster majoring in crop management and services. He was a very active FFA member participating in several CDE’s (Career Development Events) winning the state in grain merchandizing. He served on many committees, was the student advisor and received his State FFA Degree. He placed second in the state in the proficiency area of diversified livestock and crop production. Nofziger was also in 4-H, played basketball, was a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Club.
Miami East FFA holds annual parent-member banquet CASSTOWN, Ohio — The Miami East FFA Chapter recently held its 51st annual Parent Member Banquet. Over 240 parents, members, and guests were in attendance at Miami East Junior High Auditoria. In 2009, the Chapter was ranked 4th out of 315 chapters in the National Chapter Application. Also, Miami East was a Top 10 chapter in all the areas of student and community development. The Miami East application was then sent on for national judging and they were named a 2-Star National Chapter at the National FFA Convention.
Also at the 2009 State FFA Convention Graduate Laura Colebaugh placed first in the state in the Agri-Entrepreneurship Award area. At the 2010 State FFA Convention Graduate Eric Percel will be recognized for being the 2010 District 5-Star in Agribusiness. He will also be recognized for being in the Top 4 in the state in the Agricultural Processing Proficiency Area.
Three officers, Kelsey Wintow, Jessica Starry, and Victoria Kinney submitted officer books for review at the district evaluations. All three earned a gold rating.
FFA members are given the opportunity to earn four degrees during their membership in the organization. The first is the greenhand degree represented by a bronze pin. Students were recognized that reached the second degree presented – the chapter FFA degree. 27 candidates met and exceeded the minimum qualifications for this degree. The candidates were Amanda Bartel, Samantha Blevins, Brittney Brookhart, Brooke Combs, Jacob Eidemiller, Sam Everett, Chris Frazier, Josh Furrow, Steven Hall, Angelina Henger, Shane Kingrey, Meagan McKinney, Jacob Miller, Ryan Miller, Brooke North, Amber Owen, Dani Sands, Ashley Schaffer, Chelsea Sherman, Heather Skaggs, Dylan Taylor, Alex Wallace, Shannon Wargo, Samantha Wimmer, and Aliyah Wright.
One of the premier goals of the FFA is to promote leadership among its students. There was one individual recognized with the Honorary Chapter FFA Degree – Miami County Farm Bureau. Proficiency awards are designed to recognize the efforts of members who have outstanding Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) programs and have kept accurate records. Winners of the 2010 Chapter Proficiency Awards were: Agri-Entrepreneurship – Josh Furrow. Furrow started his own business, Furrow’s Chicken Sales. He raised and sold market chickens. His application placed first in the district and Top 4 in the state. Further results will be given at the upcoming State FFA Convention. Agricultural Sales – Danielle Sands. Sands has been selling her home-raised eggs to her family and friends. She has built a good reputation for having quality, farm fresh eggs. Beef Production – Kyle Roeth. Roeth earned his FFA degree from his business, Roeth’s Beef. He buys young dairy beef feeders, raises them and sells custom order beef. Diversified Horticulture Production – Hannah Allen. Allen raises many different types of vegetables. Diversified Livestock – Placement – Lucas Hershberger. Hershberger secured job placement at two locations – a dairy and a beef farm. He is responsible for taking care of newborns, milking cows, feeding the livestock, and other general farmhand responsibilities. Floriculture – Kaylee Schaefer. Schaefer has raised several hundred potted mum flowers for the past few years. She waters daily, fertilizes and prunes for optimal growth, and markets them to family and friends. Landscape Management – Heather Plunkett. Plunkett tended and cared for her family’s landscaping. She designed flower beds, selected flowering and easy to maintain plants, and maintained the beauty of her work. She has learned a great deal that preparation makes weeding a lot easier. Poultry production – Josh Furrow. Furrow raised and sold 199 broilers for his SAE. He sold them to family and friends. His application placed first in the district and earned a gold rating at the state evaluation. His application will be forwarded to the National FFA for further evaluation. Sheep Production – Brittany Brookhart. Brookhart raises and shows her own market lambs. Small Animal Care and Production – Seth Coverstone. Coverstone earned his State FFA Degree through the raising and selling of Golden Retriever puppies. Specialty Animal – Victoria Kinney. Kinney purchases and raises her own market goats for the Miami County Fair. Specialty Crop – Corey Rindler. Rindler raised raised a quarter of an acre of all-natural Japanese white hull-less popcorn. Corey used no chemicals in the raising of the popcorn and marketed it to family and friends. He hand harvested and removed all the kernels from the ear by hand. Vegetable Production – Hannah Allen. Allen raise common vegetables, and often specialty vegetables that her family enjoys.
The Star Greenhand award was presented to Emily Johnson and Corrine Melvin. Johnson has competed in food science and technology, ag sales, and parliamentary procedures. Melvin has participated in general livestock judging, greenhand quiz, and soils judging. The Blue and Gold Spirit Award was presented to Katelyn Melvin. The Star Chapter Leader award was presented to Sheena Roach for her efforts in coordinating events as the chapter president this past year.
New chapter officers for the 2010-11 school year include: Chaplain Rick Thimmes, Historian Brady Davis, Sentinel Jacob Eidemiller, Student Advisor Kyle Roeth, Reporter Corrine Melvin, Treasurer Montana Woolley, Secretary Emily Johnson, Vice President Angela Henger and President Victoria Kinney. |
