Following God’s call of Faith

By Sandra Sheridan

Genesis 12:1 “Now the LORD said to Abram, ‘Go forth from your country . . . To the land which I will show you . . .’”

Most people like to have a plan when they start an adventure. Planning a journey involves making preparations and setting goals. These steps keep you on track and help ensure arrival at the proper place. But what if you were asked to move forward without really knowing your destination? This would take a lot of faith! And that’s just what you need when allowing God to direct your life. But when a person steps out in answer to God’s call, He promises to guide them step by step.

One day God told Abram to leave his country of birth and to take a journey. He promised that He would bless him, make him into a great nation, protect him, and bless the world through his family line. The only drawback was that the Lord didn’t specify Abram’s exact destination or give any detailed directions on how to get there. He only told Abram to start out in faith and promised He would guide. So, at the age of 75, Abram took this huge step of faith.

For many years Abram lived as a tent dweller and looked for the city God had designed for him. At times he struggled to find his way, made mistakes, and wondered what to do next. Tragically he even tried to fulfill God’s promise of a son by taking matters into his own hands. But through it all Abram made a habit of calling on the name of the Lord regularly and God led him every step of the way. Abram believed God and it was counted to him as righteousness. In the end God fulfilled his promises and today, all believers throughout the world are the beneficiaries of the blessings that came through Abram’s descendant, Jesus Christ.

The Biblical biography of Abram teaches us many lessons. Every believer has been called by God to step out on a journey of faith.

Many times we may, like Abram, feel confused, wonder what’s next, or make mistakes when we take our eyes off of the Lord. Yet Abram’s life of faith encourages us to keep moving forward and trust God to reveal the way. And that is exactly what He will do.

So, if you would like to go on a difficult but great adventure it’s never too late to answer God’s call. And if you are already on this journey but are confused, don’t despair. Just continue to worship and daily call upon the Lord. He will bring you to the destination.

When God calls His children, He guides them step-by-step. He was faithful to Abram and He will be faithful to you.
