Ted Hunt, 87, lifelong resident of Tippecanoe County, Ind., died on Oct. 21. He served the community as an educator for more than four decades, 35 of those years as principal of Battle Ground Elementary, but prior to that at Pine Township, Greenhill, Elston and Klondike schools. Ted’s greatest passion throughout his life was raising Hereford beef show cattle. Along with his dad and older brother, Hunt Bros. Herefords was founded in his early childhood and continued throughout his life. Every spare minute he wasn’t working at school was spent farming, working with, and showing his Herefords. He showed in many local, state, and national shows, including 75+ years at the Indiana State Fair. He has received innumerable honors and awards over the years for his work in the Hereford/beef industry, and was honored by being nominated and selected for the Indiana Livestock Breeders Hall of Fame in 2022. His drive to educate others was often on display in this area as well, as he regularly helped young 4-Hers and anyone else who was interested, learn about raising and showing beef cattle, including providing calves and education for The Farm at Prophetstown. He was a member of Covenant Church from its beginning participating in their Young at Heart group, and also attended Battle Ground United Methodist Church in recent years. He was active in Battle Ground Lions Club, the Indiana Hereford Association, and other organizations throughout his life. Ted was preceded in death by his wife, Julie, parents Herschel “Doc” and Isabelle Hunt, and siblings Bud Hunt, and Bee Horner. He is survived by his children, Tiffani (Geoff) Knowles and Travis Hunt, and grandchildren Gabe, Isabelle, and Lydia. A celebration of Ted’s life was held Nov. 6 at Covenant Church in West Lafayette. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Battle Ground Elementary School or the Indiana Junior Hereford Association would be appreciated.
