25 years ago: Eleven to be charged in tobacco crimes

1965: 50 years ago

Edwin Stark, of near Mays in Rush County, caught a hand and arm in a feed grinder and is in Henry County Hospital, where doctors are trying to save his hand.
Because of the snowstorms this month, the Henry County highway crew was using a front end loader that had been rented from Irving Materials to clear huge snow drifts east of Middletown, and the drifts were so high a bridge was invisible. The loader cleared the road, bridge and all, wrecking both bridge and grader.
Three Hancock County, Ind., boys won first place in judging contest at the Buckeye All-American Sheep Show and Sale at Kenton, Ohio. They were Jerry Strahl and Danny Strahl, Greenfield, and John Merlau, New Palestine. Their coach for the contest was Maurice Strahl father of the Strahl brothers.
1975: 40 years ago

W.T. “Bill” Anderson of Bedford, purebred Angus and Berkshire breeder, was nominated to the Hall of Fame portrait gallery of the Indiana Livestock Breeders Assoc.
The final tally on Indiana 1974 corn crop production was down 27 percent from 1973 and the lowest since the corn blight year of 1970. The average yield was 71.3 bushels. Soybean production was down 28 percent from 1973, lowest since 1967, with yields of 25 bushels per acre.
The 1975 officers of the Indiana Livestock Breeders Assoc., elected at Farm Science Days at Purdue University recently, are Dennis Shoup, Michigantown, president; Sam Washburn, Fowler, vice president; and James Outhouse, Purdue animal scientist, secretary-treasurer.
1990: 25 years ago
Eleven men are expected to be charged with engaging in organized crime involving burley tobacco sales in Kentucky at the New London Tobacco Market. Police found marketing and dealers’ cards that were allegedly used to sell excess tobacco, which was taken off the warehouse floor.

Real estate for sale: Champaign County, Ill., farmland, 74 acres, $3,800 an acre, will lease back – Rantoul, Ill.
In what’s being called the biggest land conservation deal in Michigan’s history, the state and a private landowner have agreed to conserve 271,000 acres of undeveloped property in the Upper Peninsula – the land deal is called the Northern Great Lakes Forest Project.
December milk production in the top 20 states totaled 12.4 billion pounds, up 1 percent from December 2003, according to the USDA’s preliminary estimate. Output per cow in the 20 states averaged 1,602 pounds, up 6 pounds. Milk cow numbers totaled 7.76 million head, 47,000 head more than a year previous.
