‘Habitat for Dogmanity’ club assembles eight doghouses

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Braving fridgid temperatures on Feb. 10, a group of 25 volunteers put together doghouses in an unheated garage with windchills well below 0-degrees F.
While everyone was cold, any dogs left outside during such weather without shelter would have been even colder. Which is why volunteers from Friends of Indianapols Dogs Outside and Walk a Hound, Loose Pound got together to build the doghouses. Billed as Habitat for Dogmanity, the group built eight doghouses that will be given to families with outdoor dogs in need of shelter.
Some of the lumber used was leftover from Habitat for Humanity building projects.
FIDO helps dogs who have a home, but spend their lives outside.
FIDO provides food, access to preventive medical care, fencing and shelter in some of the poorest areas of Indianapolis.
One of the greatest needs is a ready supply of doghouses.
During the first event, held in October, the two groups built 10 houses.
Walk A Hound, Lose a pound is a group of volunteers who offer people a chance to get fit by walking shelter dogs. Not only do people benefit from the exercise, but it gives shelter dogs more socializaiton skills and gives them a better chance at adoption.
The event took place at the Indianapols Animal Care and Control facility.
