JEWETT, Ill. — With a handful of hybrids topping the 240 bushel-per-acre mark, the corn test site in Jasper County, Ill. earned record yields for the location.
“These high yields just made my day,” said George Holsapple, the grower who owned the land for the corn hybrid test. “These are the highest corn yields I have ever seen on my farm.”
The test was conducted by Farmer’s Independent Research of Seed Technologies (F.I.R.S.T.) on Holsapple’s rural Jewett farm. The soil was a Cisne clay loam. The field had a .5 percent slope, and it was moderately drained. The previous crop on the field was soybeans treated with Roundup.
“Even more amazing is this site was a replant,” reported F.I.R.S.T. manager Eric Beyers. “Its original planting date was April 24, but that was flooded out by big rains.”
He replanted the field on May 24 at a rate of 32,000 seeds per acre. On Oct. 6, Beyers returned and harvested an estimated 28,100 plants per acre.
“The significant lodging scores reflect root lodging,” Beyers said. “Harvested plant heights were tall, ranging from 10-12 feet.”
Crows hybrid 4799VT3 earned the best mark with an average yield of 244.3 bushels per acre. This hybrid had an estimated gross income of $1,152.90, and its moisture level was 20.6 percent. Two LG Seeds hybrids finished second and third. LG Seeds LG2620VT3 earned 243.4 bu./acre and LG Seeds LG2555VT3 netted 242.5 bu./acre.
Other top-producing hybrids were AgriGold A6439VT3 and Fielders Choice NG6820, both with an average yield of 240.5 bu./acre. Late-season test The yields for the late-season test were not as high, but still strong – especially considering the weather challenges.
Brown Enterprises hybrid 730VT3 had the best result in this trial with a yield of 232.6 bu./acre. Croplan hybrid 7131VT3 finished second at 232.2 bu./acre.
