Miami East succeeds at state convention

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Thursday to Saturday, April 30 to May 1, members of the Miami East FFA Chapter attended the Ohio FFA State Convention in Columbus.

Members were recognized for various accomplishments and competed in several contests. While in Columbus, the members from the convention’s Career Show, met FFA members from across the state, and enjoyed eating out! Motivational speakers at the convention included National FFA Eastern Region Vice President Hannah Crossen from Ohio and Professional Motivational Speakers Ed Gerety and Michael Peterson.

During the National Chapter Award results the chapter was named the No. four chapter in the state, out of over 315 chapters.
Additionally, the chapter placed in the Top 10 in the areas of Student Development and Community Development. These results are from the chapter’s National Chapter Application. The application will now be sent to the National FFA for review and placing.
Additionally, the chapter was recognized for being a Gold Medal Chapter. Members sharing informational presentations were Chris Heiss, Katelyn Fourman, Amanda Werling and Hannah Long.
A highlight of the weekend was the conferring of the State FFA Degree. This year, Miami East had five members receive such an honor. Lucas Hershberger, son of Bill and Janie Hershberger, Laura Colebaugh, daughter of Steve and Lisa Colebaugh, Alysha Coverstone, daughter of Mark and Brenda Coverstone, Logan Pyers, son of Kevin and Lori Pyers, and Eric Percel, son of Phil and Jane Percel received the State FFA Degree. The degree requirements are based on their earned income from their Supervised Agricultural Experience program, leadership experience, and FFA and community activities.

Recognized for their State FFA Proficiency Awards were Eric Percel and Laura Colebaugh. They received a medal and a cash prize. Eric placed 3rd in the agricultural processing proficiency and 3rd in the agri-entrepreneurship award. Laura placed 3rd in the area of specialty crop proficiency and 1st in the area of agri-entrepreneurship.

Heather Skaggs was selected to participate in the State FFA Chorus. Hannah Allen, Daniel Williams, and Sheena Roach participated in the State FFA Band. The members practiced and presented two concerts during the convention.

Being recognized in the state agricultural science fair were Hannah Allen and Victoria Kinney, who placed first in Division 4 with their experiment entitled “The Effects of Crude Protein on the Growth of Market Broilers.” They earned a silver rating.

Competing in the state cooperatives education career development event were Eric Percel, Logan Pyers, Katelyn Melvin, Lucas Hershberger and Seth Coverstone. They took a written test on cooperatives and agribusiness. The team placed 14th and Logan was the highest placing individual from Miami East.

Competing in the state farm business management career development were Rick Thimmes, Justin Hershberger, Catey Hiegel, Kaylee Schaefer, Victoria Kinney, Austin Westfall, Caleb Everett, Chris Beckman, David Long, and Tanner Sanderson.
Competing in the Greenhand Quiz Career Development Event were Josh Furrow, Samantha Blevins, Brittney Brookhart, and Amanda Bartel. The team placed 34th and the highest team member was Josh Furrow.

Alexander FFA officers attend training
ALBANY, Ohio — On April 24, 2009 District 10 officer training was held at Logan High School. Members of the Alexander FFA chapter attended the training. Members included Zach Crabtree, Noelle Eveland, Ethan Sayers, Ben Smith, Tim Smith, Jessie Sinclair, Jacob Smith, Whitney Mullins, Heather Gould, Kathy Kasler and Kim Holcomb.

Break-out sessions were held to train the president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, reporter and sentinel. The training was themed – “Road Trip: Chapter Success Straight Ahead.” The officers in attendance will use their training in the following year to serve on their chapter’s officer team.
